Kyoto, Nara & Osaka Tour | 05 Nights / 06 Days
Kyoto – Osaka – Nara

DAY 01: Arrival at Osaka Kansai or Itami Airport
Upon arrival, meet assist and transfer to your hotel by private car.
Upon arrival at the hotel, you will be free for leisure.

DAY 02: Kyoto
Enjoy a fully guided day through the ancient city of Kyoto – one of the most deeply historic cities in the world. First, you can see the Fushimi Inari Shrine, renowned for its trail of thousands of torii gates. Then visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace. This was the former residence of Japan’s Imperial Family until 1868, during which the capital moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.

Tour Kiyomizu-dera, a famous temple in Japan that is best known for its large wooden stage that overlooks a hillside of natural scenery. We will end our day in the Gion Geisha District, where its streets are lined with ochaya (teahouses), exclusive establishments where guests are entertained by Geisha and Maiko. If you choose, you can also add the following optional experiences.

Please note, optional experiences may require an additional day. One such experience is to try on the traditional garment of Kimono. Many visitors to Kyoto will wear a Kimono for the day to complete the traditional atmosphere that the city is known for. You can also experience a Rickshaw Ride, Green Tea Ceremony, Zen meditation in a temple with local monks, or a Kaiseki dinner with a Geisha performance.

DAY 03: Kyoto
Once again, you will be fully guided on this day as you travel Kyoto via public transportation.
Continue to explore Kyoto, traveling to Nijo Castle, a designated UNESCO world heritage site and a perfect architectural example of castles from the feudal era of Japan. Next, we will visit the Golden Pavilion covered with 18 carat gold leaf. This three-story structure was originally built by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397.

Then we will tour Arashiyama. First is a visit to see Tenryuji Temple where you can have a glimpse of traditional rock landscape garden design. Then proceed through a dense bamboo grove, past several small shrines, tea shops and private houses before arriving at the Togetsukyo Bridge over Hozu River.

Optional sections for this part of the tour include a ride on the Sagano Romantic Train or a cruise along the Hozugawa River.

DAY 04: Kyoto – Osaka
Travel to Osaka with your guide and explore the city via its public transportation system. Visit Osaka Castle, which was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in aims for it to be the center of a new, unified Japan.

Afterwards, we will go to the Umeda Sky Building, a 173-meter-tall building that grants spectacular views of Osaka from its Floating Garden Observatory. Then, visit the colorful, neon-lit entertainment district of Dotonbori. This area is popularly known for being the heart of the city, filled with eye-catching billboards and numerous restaurants. Lastly, make your way to Shinsaibashi, the largest shopping district in Osaka.

Note: We will courier your big baggage from Kyoto to your hotel in Osaka. Please pack your essentials for 1 night in a small bag to carry with you to Osaka

DAY 05: Osaka – Nara – Osaka
Today, we will travel to Nara and visit Nara Park which houses a number of interesting sites. First is the Nara National Museum which displays a permanent collection Buddhist art in addition to temporary exhibitions. You can then visit the nearby Isuien Garden – a traditional Japanese Garden with a scenic view structured using “shakkei” or borrowed scenery, fusing the background with the trees within the area.

As you tour around Tokyo you will have an expert local guide to bring you to the best tourist spots. The sightseeing schedule is fully up to you and is flexible to the needs of the group.

Then how about going to the man-made island known as Odaiba? On the island there are many entertainment options available in addition to the famed Rainbow Bridge.

DAY 03: Hakone – A National Park with the Best Views of Mt. Fuji.
Traverse Hakone, an iconic hot spring destination, by public transportation like the Hakone Tozan Cable Car or enjoy a bird’s eye view from the Hakone Ropeway. Soak in the therapeutic waters and feel your body being rejuvenated. Afterwards enjoy a Japanese Kaiseki (seasonal) banquet dinner that will give you a chance to taste the ingredients of the season.

DAY 04 & 05: Kyoto – The Heart of Traditional Japan.
Our day starts with a trip on the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto, the traditional and cultural center of Japan. For over 1000 years Kyoto has influenced politics and culture in the country. It was the former capital before Edo (Tokyo). When the feudal age came to an end much of the nation was set to modernized, but the city set out to preserve its proud history. As a traditional center the history, religion, and culture remained unembellished. For two days you will have a private guide to take you to the most desired locations.

There are many sites to see in Kyoto and can be broken down into Southern, Eastern, Central, Northern, and Arashiyama districts. No matter where you choose to visit each site has a priceless historical value that will leave you in awe. Just for quick reference Fushimi Inari Shrine has over 1000 torii gates; Tofukuji Temple has the Hojo Garden that surrounds all four sides of the building, Kiyomizudera Temple has the stage and main hall that was built without nails, Kinkakuji Temple is known as the Golden Pavilion, Arashiyama has the photogenic bamboo grove, and Gion is where you can find the Geisha district.

DAY 06: Kyoto | Nara – Japan’s First Permanent Capital with Excellent Examples of Traditional Architecture.

The city marks the change in history where a centralized government was established because before the capital would change locations when the Emperor passed away. During this time the culture in Japan had time to develop and evolve, which can be seen in the architecture and other structure that have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

There you can see the largest bronze Daibutsu (Great Buddha) in the iconic Todaiji Temple. Surrounding the temple is Nara Park where there are over 1000 free roaming deer, which are regarded as deities of the city. DAY 01: Kyoto or Osaka – Himeji – Okayama
Meet your guide at your hotel in Kyoto or Osaka and travel to Himeji by bullet train. Your first stop will be Himeji Castle, one of the original surviving twelve castles of Japan. It is known as “White Egret Castle” and “White Heron Castle” because of its brilliant white exterior, which resembles a bird taking flight. DAY 02: Okayama – Kurashiki – Okayama
Once again, you will be fully guided as you travel between Okayama and Kurashiki. Travel to the Canal Area in Kurashiki – this location was very important along the distribution route of rice during the Edo period. Today it is a scenic area where visitors can walk along the canal and see the old storage units, along with buildings from the Edo period. We will also visit the Ohara Museum of Art, which is considered the first museum of Western art in Japan. It is a private museum consisting of three adjacent buildings next to the canal. Upon your return to Okayama, you may tour Korakuen Garden, a landscape garden and the main attraction of the city. It is one of three most famous gardens in Japan, featuring a large pond, walking paths, and many different types of trees.

DAY 03: Okayama – Yasugi – Matsue
Today, you will travel will your guide and visit Yasugi and Matsue via public transportation. In Yasugi, visit the Adachi Museum of Art. Here, you will be able to see the award-winning garden which is the creation of Adachi Zenko. He hoped that viewing the garden and art together would pique people’s interest in Japanese art. In Matsue, travel on to one of the islands in the lake to visit Yushien Garden. While the garden features many traditional landscape elements, it is famous for its collection of 250 types of peonies. Some are kept outside in traditional, protective, bamboo coverings, but far more are kept inside in the lovely indoor garden. After enjoying so many beautiful sights, continue your relaxation at your hotel where you can soak in the onsen hot spring and enjoy a traditional Kaiseki dinner in the Ryokan.

DAY 04: Matsue
Continue to explore the castle town of Matsue, beginning with the castle itself. This is one of only a dozen original castles in Japan, meaning that its main tower has survived to this day through fires, earthquakes, and the anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji Period. It is sometimes called the “black castle” after its darkly-colored, austere exterior. You can also enjoy a lovely cruise around the moat of the castle to get more interesting views of the castle and surrounding area. Visit the home of Lafcadio Hearn, one of the first western authors of Japanese culture. Hearn’s former residence is now open to the public along with a museum located next door that is dedicated to his work and person. Take a walk down the streets of the old samurai district where samurai families used to live. DAY 05: Matsue – Izumo – Hiroshima
Travel to Izumo via public transportation with your guide. In Izumo, you will visit the Izumo Grand Shrine. Considered to be the oldest in all of Japan, it has been in existence since at least the early 700’s but unfortunately, there are no records of it being built. Due the shrine’s age pre-dating the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, the architecture of the building is a purely Japanese style called Taisha-zukuri. After your tour of this ancient shrine, you will transfer to Hiroshima station.

DAY 06: Hiroshima

One of the homes, Buke Yashiki, has been restored and filled with artifacts making for a very interesting time capsule of samurai life.

Day 20 Kyoto
Today, you will begin with the private garden at the Mirei Shigemori Garden Museum. While the home dates back to the Edo period, the Garden and tea houses were designed by Mirei Shigemori after he acquired the home in 1943. Tour Kiyomizu-dera, a famous temple in Japan that is best known for its large wooden stage that overlooks a hillside of natural scenery.

You may then enter the studio of the versatile artist Kawai Kanjiro. Here, he developed some of his most famous works which often came in the form of pottery. At that time Kobo Daishi held a groundbreaking ceremony and then dedicated his life to the construction of Danjo Garan. Tonight, you will be staying at a temple where you will be able to enjoy the simpler things in life. Your dinner will be similar to a Japanese kaiseki dinner, with more focus on natural flavor. This form of cooking is referred to as Shojin Ryori, or Monk’s Food. As is tradition among practicing Buddhists, your meal will be vegetarian. After relaxing at the temple lodgings for a while, you may choose to venture back out to Okunoin where you may visit the graveyard once again by night.

Today, you will first enjoy a relaxing Green Tea Ceremony. This activity was once only available for the social elite but has now been made available to a wide audience.

You will be able to see how this ceremony encompasses not only tea but also pottery, confectionary, flower arrangement, and most importantly: patience. However, perfection is not encouraged so please enjoy your Ikebana experience as a time to meditate on the art of flower arrangement and do not focus too much on whether you have done it improperly.

You will also be able to learn the art of calligraphy, even if you do not know how to write in Japanese. After enjoying these cultural activities, you will be able to visit either Osaka Castle -or- Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi. Visit Osaka Castle, which was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in aims for it to be the center of a new, unified Japan. Alternatively, visit the colorful, neon-lit entertainment district of Dotonbori. Explore Tokyo on Your Own.
Walk around the Tokyo streets at night.
Night in Tokyo.

Now that you have become acquainted with Tokyo with the help of your guide, you can feel comfortable discovering more of the city on your own today.

In the morning, start your day at the Tokyo Skytree, which is the tallest structure in Japan, measuring more than 2,000 feet high! Here, you can enjoy amazing panoramic views of Tokyo from the observation deck, along with plenty of options for dining and shopping located inside the tower itself.

Once you’ve had your fill of the tower, you can walk over to the nearby Ryogoku area, where you can watch a morning sumo practice. Witnessing the strength and smarts of these famous wrestlers is a unique experience, especially if you are an avid sports spectator.

For lunch, head to Tsukiji Outer Market.
Formerly known as Tsukiji Fish Market, the wholesale sect was relocated and now goes by Toyoso Market. Although you can no longer watch the live fish auctions unfold, fresh seafood is delivered from Toyoso to the area daily, and you can enjoy sushi, among other authentic dishes, at many of the restaurants lining the area.

As nighttime approaches, you can head back over to Shinjuku, where the nightlife is vibrant until the wee hours. Your options are vast, depending on your mood. You can make a reservation at the Robot Restaurant, where high-tech entertainment unfolds. For a more casual feel, grab a hearty bowl of ramen, and hit the Golden Gai, a strip of six alleys housing nearly 200 tiny, Izakaya-style pubs. If you’re a gamer, in nearby Kabukicho, you can experience a pachinko parlor (a mix between pinball and slot machines).

Day 4: Tokyo – Hakone (Train)
After breakfast, you’ll travel on a 1-hour train from Tokyo Station to Hakone, which hosts the finest hot spring resorts in Japan. Popular as a hot spring destination for hundreds of years, its natural beauty and abundance of hot spring baths make it an ideal spot to relax after spending time in the capital, just as feudal lords did hundreds of years ago.

While in Hakone, you’ll have the chance to walk parts of the old Tokaido Trail–which once connected Edo (Tokyo) with the Kyoto of times past. You can also take a scenic ride on the Tozan Railway through the mountains to get to Gora. There, you’ll transfer to the cable car to access Lake Ashinoko. This breathtaking waterside setting shares views with the famed Mount Fuji, and you can even take a sightseeing boat to cruise along the lake for a closer look.

You’ll stay the night in the Ryokan Inn, where you can unwind with another hot spring soak.
Night in Hakone.

Day 5: Hakone – Hiroshima (By Train)
Today, you’ll take the bullet train for 4 hours and 20 minutes from Hakone to Hiroshima.
Known as the first city to ever experience an atomic bomb, Hiroshima was physically destroyed during World War II. The people of Hiroshima, however, rebuilt the city, filling it with charm and history.

On arrival, city tour of Hiroshima.
– Explore Peace Memorial Park, which is home to the Peace Memorial Museum, the A-Bomb Dome, and the Cenotaph, a tomb for the victims.
– Enjoy the beautiful Shukkeien Garden, known for mini landscape depictions and lush greenery.
– Go to Hondori Street to visit the pedestrian-only Hondori Shopping Arcade, where you can buy apparel, jewelry, games, and souvenirs

Transfer to the hotel.
Night in Hiroshima.

Day 6: Hiroshima – Train & Ferry to Miyajima Island
Today, you’ll take a 30-minute train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Port.
Then, you’ll board the ferry to Miyajima, which literally means “Shrine Island,” located in the Seto Inland Sea.
Considered to be a sacred place, Miyajima is a prime example of how the Japanese seamlessly blend architecture with natural beauty.

Deer and monkeys wander freely around Miyajima, especially on Mount Misen, the tallest mountain on the island. Hike one of three trails or take the ropeway to the top to capture the most magnificent views of the island.

In Miyajima, you’ll stay at another Ryokan Inn.
Indulge in a seafood-based kaiseki meal featuring oysters from the local sea, along with other fresh delicacies.
Night in Miyajima Island.

Day 7: Miyajima – Kyoto (Train)
Breakfast.
Train to Kyoto.
Welcome to Kyoto!
The former imperial capital of Japan is where the traditional Japanese high arts flourished. On your first day in Kyoto, you can explore the arts and culture on your own. Consider indulging in a tea ceremony, learning calligraphy, taking a flower arranging class, and even studying ninja arts!

If you enjoy shopping, Kyoto is famous for its textiles. You can visit Kyoto Station and Downtown Kyoto, where you’ll find items like kimonos, ceramics, teas, and antiques.

Nearby Kyoto Station, you can dine at Musashi. Known for its conveyor belt-style sushi delivery system, you may encounter a wait, however, since this is a popular stop.

Round out the day with a stroll through scenic gardens. Ryoan-ji Temple is known for its dry landscapes that lend to the gorgeous Zen garden structure, while Okochi-Sanso Villa in Arashinyama is known for its stunning bamboo groves.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Kyoto.

Day 8: Kyoto Tour
In the morning, your guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel.
Your guide will take you to Japan’s most beautiful and historic temples and shrines, and you’ll walk down ancient streets where Japanese nobles once strolled.

You’ll begin at the Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of vermillion torii gates, which lead to a forest of the sacred Mount Inari, belonging to the shrine gods. The shrine honors Inari, the Shinto god of rice.

Then, you’ll visit the Higashiyama District to see Kiyomizudera. Founded in 780, it’s one of the most celebrated Japanese temples and sits on the Otowa Waterfall along the wooded hills. You can also walk over to the Jishu Shrine, which honors love and matchmaking.

Next, you’ll visit Gion, which is known for its geisha-filled streets. The animated area is home to the Yasaka Shrine, which is more than 1,350 years old and is illuminated by hundreds of lanterns at nightfall. Close by, you’ll find Zen at Kenninji, which serves as one of the head Rinzai Sect temples of Japanese Buddhism, where the paintings of dragons and thunder gods are striking.

Finally, you’ll make the trip north to Kinkaku-ji, the gold-clad waterside temple that represents the affluence of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu’s reign.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Kyoto.

Day 9: Kyoto | Excursion to Nara
This morning, you’ll take a 45-minute train from Kyoto Station to Nara Station.
Nara is located in the central west of Honshu, the Japanese main island.

Formerly known as Heijo-kyo, this city occupies an important position in the history of Japan as the first capital from 710 until 784. During this period, a large number of shrines and temples were erected under the protection of the imperial family and aristocrats. However, when the monks in the surrounding hills started gaining too much influence and eventually tried to seize power, it was decided to move the capital to Heian-kyo, which is now known as Kyoto.

Many of the temples built at the height of Heijo-kyo are currently registered as World Heritage Sites. Both Japanese and foreign tourists visit the city to see these temples. A visit to Todaiji will allow you to view one of the country’s largest bronze Buddha statues, while a trip to Horyuji includes a viewing of the world’s oldest wooden structures still in existence.

End your day among nature and the free-roaming deer in Nara Park, where scenic mountains surround the city. You will then return to Kyoto on the train.
Transfer to the hotel.
Night in Kyoto.

Day 10: Kyoto – Osaka (Train)
Take the 40-minute train from Kyoto to Osaka, where the end of your journey will begin to unfold. Famous for its inhabitants and local cuisine, the people of Osaka are widely known for their outgoing spirit and friendliness, and the local dialect has been adopted as the standard for stand-up comedians and actors.

Osaka’s regional cuisine is said to be the best in Japan. If you missed your chance to try okonomiyaki in Hiroshima, now is the time! You can also taste native favorites like takoyaki (octopus dumplings), udon noodles, and Japanese barbecue—don’t forget about the Kobe beef!

Following a great meal, make sure to get some rest.
Tomorrow, your guide will join you for a tour of the town.
Night in Osaka.

Day 11: Osaka Tour
In the morning, meet your guide in the hotel lobby, and prepare to see more of Osaka!
In a city filled with hidden gems, your guide will lead you to nooks that most tourists don’t know exist.

To start, you’ll visit Doguyasuji Arcade, which is a cooking mecca! If you are looking to spruce up your kitchen tools, this is the place to shop. Just make sure you check how much space is left in your luggage first.

Next, you’ll visit Kuromon Ichibi in the Chuo Ward. This is the place to feast on plenty of Osaka street food. With a variety of food stalls and 25 restaurants, you can expect to sample plenty of noodles, curries, grilled meats, and of course, seafood.

Finally, you can head over to Amerika-mura, which hosts more than 2,000 stores, restaurants, bars, clubs, and cafés. Make a pitstop in Sankaku Koen Park, the triangular plaza, which is a popular place to people-watch for the unique fashions and latest trends of the young Osaka creatives.
Return to the hotel.

PROGRAM – 22
Japan’s Big Four: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka & Hiroshima | 10 Nights / 11 Days
Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka – Hiroshima – Miyajima Island – Tokyo

Day 1: Arrive Tokyo
Arrive Tokyo.
Transfer to the hotel by public transport.
Check-in and rest in the hotel.
Night in Tokyo.

Day 2: Tokyo | See Sumo & Taste Sake in Tokyo
Today you’ll get a deeper insight into some traditional and spiritual aspects of Japanese culture. Begin by heading to a morning sumo training session in Ryogoku, where you’ll witness the skill and power of these traditional athletes. More ceremony than sport, sumo wrestling is a tradition that began centuries ago — as the legend goes, it started as a ritual to entertain the gods.

Afterward, take a short walk to the Edo-Tokyo Museum to discover what it was like to live in 16th-century Japan. Learn about how the residents worked together to build and protect their communities while walking through the halls of a replica Edo-era town. End the afternoon with a visit to one of Tokyo’s sake tasting centers. Choose from a sampling of over 80 different fermented wines and spirits as you learn the art of food and sake pairing.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Tokyo.

Day 3: Tokyo | Explore Futuristic Odaiba
Today you’ll explore the artificial island of Odaiba, a hot spot for futuristic fun. The trip to this shopping and entertainment district is enjoyable, whether you arrive by taking a cruise through Tokyo Bay or by crossing the colorful Rainbow Bridge. Start at TeamLab, a permanent interactive art exhibition on the island that gives new meaning to the term “modern art” — be prepared to follow art as it moves along the walls. Car enthusiasts can also visit the nearby Toyota City Showcase. Check out the latest innovations in the technology zone, reminisce about the old days in the vintage car collection rooms, or test-drive a favorite car on their private track (an international driving license is required).

In the evening, experience one of Tokyo’s wackiest shows at the Robot Restaurant. Less of a culinary adventure and more of a theatrical experience, this 90-minute show is jam-packed with neon lights and vibrant music and is a great way to experience Japan’s techno culture. Afterward, weave in and out of the alleys of the famous Golden Gai district, stopping in some of the area’s hundreds of bars.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Tokyo.

Day 4: Tokyo – Kyoto (Train)
Transfer today to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan.
Overflowing with history and a lot more traditional than its Tokyo counterpart, things here move at a slower pace and the people tend to be more laid-back. While here, a visit to what is arguably the most famous shrine in Japan – Fushimi Inari – is an absolute must. Featured in the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, this shrine has more than 10,000 picturesque red torii gates. They were all donated by Japanese individuals and businesses as a sign of appreciation to the god Inari for blessings received.

Your visit to Inari perfectly sets the tone for your next stop: a traditional Japanese arts show. As well as offering a chance to see a performance by a maiko (geisha in training), this hourlong theatrical experience also introduces you to various skilled artists, including ikebana (flower arrangers), puppeteers, koto (Japanese harp players), and court musicians. In the evening, talk a walk through the bustling streets of Pontocho.
Right next to the Kamogawa River, this area is home to a wide range of restaurants and bars.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Kyoto.

Day 5: Kyoto | Enjoy Bamboo Groves & Temples in Arashiyama
Just outside Kyoto is the tranquil area of Arashiyama. You will start your day with a ride on an open-air train that offers amazing views of the river and the surrounding forest. (Note: This train does not operate in the winter months.) You’ll then travel down the Hozugawa River on a traditional Japanese boat. This activity is often the highlight of the trip, and depending on the season, you’ll be floating past white and pink cherry blossoms (in March), the deep green leaves of a warm summer (in July), or the brilliant and fiery colors of autumn trees (in November).

Then you will embark on a tour of some of the area’s well-known sites. Tenryuji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses one of the most picturesque and ancient landscape gardens in the entire country. Behind it, you will find its world-famous bamboo grove, which transports visitors into another realm — or at least appears to. Also in the area, you will find the Nonomiya shrine and the Iwatayama Monkey Park where macaques roam freely. If you’re up for a walk, there’s a lovely temple that houses hundreds of statues. If you look closely, you’ll find some of these Buddhist statues sporting glasses and carrying cellphones, a reflection of how modern life has also affected spiritual practices.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Kyoto.

Day 6: Kyoto | Excursion to Nara
Today you’ll side-trip to the city of Nara, famous for its traditional sites and resident herds of peaceful deer. With scenic gardens, parks, temples, and shrines, it’s a quiet place that you’ll enjoy exploring at your own pace. Nara also has some stunning walking trails, one of which will take you through the Mount Kasuga Primeval Forest. The Todaiji Temple, home to the giant Daibutsu Buddha statue, is a must-see before you head back to Kyoto for the evening.
Return to the hotel.
Nigh tin Kyoto.

Day 7: Kyoto – Osaka (Train)
After breakfast, move on to Osaka.
The city gives Tokyo a run for its money when it comes to delicious cuisine. Today you’ll experience its delights with a street food tour. Enjoy being tantalized with mouthwatering smells and tastes as you traverse the city streets, sampling the specialties of the Kansai area. Savor the best rice wine in the region at a nearby sake brewery, then tour and taste at the nearby whiskey distillery. Finish your adventure in the trendy Dotonbori district. Full of fantastic restaurants, clubs, and karaoke bars, it’s the city’s go-to area for a lively night out.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Osaka.

Day 8: Osaka Tour
You’ll have the day to explore the city at your own pace. The superb Osaka Castle is a must-see, along with Shitennoji Temple, a center of spiritual life for the people of Osaka. But the city’s modern attractions are just as worthwhile, including bustling markets, the colorful district of Dotombori, the landmark Tsutenkaku Tower, the futuristic aquarium, and Abeno Harukas, currently the tallest building in Japan. Foodies won’t want to miss a visit to the Cup Noodles Museum Osaka Ikeda, dedicated to the art of instant ramen.

Go out for modern or traditional Japanese cuisine in the evening before resting at your hotel in Osaka.
Night in Osaka.

Day 9: Osaka – Hiroshima (Train)
Visit the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima
The itinerary takes you to Hiroshima on day nine, a modern city of wide boulevards, flowing rivers, and a lively downtown. Of course, it’s a tragic legacy that sets this city apart: Hiroshima was the world’s first city destroyed by an atomic bomb during World War II. (The second was Nagasaki.) You’ll learn about this 1945 event at the Peace Memorial Park, which features the ruins of Genbaku Dome, one of the only buildings that was left standing after the blast. Stroll through Shukkei-en, a Japanese garden, and stop by the beautifully landscaped fortress of Hiroshima Castle.

Then go out for Japanese food in the city center before heading to your hotel. One regional dish to look for is okonomiyaki, a savory pancake topped with shredded cabbage, noodles, and pork belly.
Return to the hotel.
Night in Hiroshima.

Day 10: Hiroshima | Excursion to Miyajima Island
Train to Tokyo in the evening.
Breakfast.
Visit the island of Miyajima.
On the short ferry ride there, be sure to stand on the deck to get a good view of the giant red torii gate rising out of the sea. Miyajima holds the rare distinction in Japan of having never experienced an earthquake. Because of this, many of its temples are entirely original and centuries old.

Be sure to visit Daisho Temple, Itsukushima Shrine, and Mount Misen. The view from the top of the mountain is superb, looking out across the inland sea. The island is also populated with friendly deer, which only adds to the fairytale-like setting.

Evening, transfer to the train station for train to Tokyo.
Transfer to the hotel.
Night in Tokyo.
